Mup shot upwards through the falling snow, a polka-dotted dash of colour against the stones of the castle walls. She had kicked the window shut before leaping into the air. She doubted anyone would guess she’d gone outside.
I need to get to Mam, she thought.
But the castle felt like it was alive with snakes, and she was afraid to go back in.
Up she flew, and up and up through the plummeting snow until she was among the turrets and gutters and the grim stone faces of the gargoyles. She paused, floating. The ground was a postage stamp of white below, the walls dropping sheer like cliffs.
The ears of her rabbit hat and the ends of her scarf whipped in the wind, the tails of her dressing gown flapped. A whiff of chimney smoke came to her on the pummelling breeze and she thought, Crow.
She swooped ahead. Skimming the slopes of roofs and skirting snow-covered turrets, she followed the ever stronger scent of smoke until she came to a deep V formed by two sloping sides of roof. Within this soot-stained valley, the castle chimneys marched away in bristling rows. Mup was surprised at how many of them there were. The clever configuration of roofing kept them hidden from sight below, and kept the wind at bay. The snow fell quite peacefully here, mingling with the smoke, which rose unmolested for several feet before being snatched across the rooftops and into the close grey sky.
It was warm and quiet, and Mup had no doubt that this was where Crow had made his sooty bed the night before. Sure enough, she found him at the far end of the valley, perched on a weather vane, which was mounted on the gable of the right-hand roof. His back was turned to her, and he was watching the sky.
Mup landed on the ridge tiles behind Crow. Snow dislodged from beneath her booted feet, rolled down the roof and fell to a distant yard below. Her legs were shaky from the shock and fear of all that she’d just witnessed – but she was not afraid of the height.
It was so deceptively calm here: peaceful-looking. Witches Borough stretched out on all sides: the frozen river, the miles of sleeping forest, the far-off hint of snowy fields. But over it all the castle loomed – dark as an infected tooth; sour with unresolved anger and hate.
Crow spun, startled, and Mup realized he had only now noticed her arrival. He covered his fright in a furious bristling of feathers. “What are you doing here?” he cawed. “This is my place! You can’t just come up here!”
“Crow, something terrible—”
“Did you fly up here?” He looked around for footprints or other evidence to prove she’d walked or climbed. Finding none, he bristled even more. “So now you’re a witch, you can go wherever you want, is that it? Like your mam and your grandma before you, you can just fly around and turn up wherever you please. Even if
